Back to School Plan

We are getting ready to start back to school on August 18th. This will be Gess' first year in middle school. Here are my current curriculum choices for the year.

Language Arts/Speech
Logic of English - We reviewed this last year and I absolutely love it!  However, with Gess' special needs and our other reviews, we have gone rather slowly through the book. I hope to complete it this year.


Essential Skills Advantage (ESA) - I am currently reviewing this product but so far we love it! It is affordable and a really great way for Gess to have some independent work in reading.



Writing
Logic of English Cursive - I am not sure cursive is going to take or not but I am going to give one more year a try. It really is easier for her when she uses it. It's easier to read and all that, but we have the habit of printing to overcome so I am not sure she will stick with it.



 Essentials in Writing - We have spent quite awhile on Level 1. This year we are moving up to Level 2. I have ordered it, but it hasn't arrived in the mail yet.


 Math 
Mathletics - We will use both the printable workbooks and the online work for practice.



CTC Math - We will use this daily.


History
Veritas Press - We are loving this and will probably take almost the entire school year to finish. We will probably select another class from them next year.


Science
I am considering using Science Shepherd Homeschool Online which is a complete online science curriculum. I will start with Introductory Science. Like history, it will be really convenient to have much of it done online. However, I really don't much about it, so I haven't decided for sure.

Bible
Gess has studied a lot of the Old and New Testament. I think we are going to focus more on teaching her how to have more of a personal devotion time and determine the topics as we go along.

Economics
I am not sure we will do a regular curriculum or just explore the topic. There is much I want Gess to learn for her independence in the future as well as school.

Printable Family Chore Chart

You know chore charts are not just for children.  As I have been struggling trying to keep the house work up among all my summer activities, homeschooling projects, exercise, blogging, church activities and other every day life events I realized that I needed a hand.  Since Gess is getting older and taking on more responsibility I though it was a good time to put some order into her routine of helping.  Then Chelsie gave me a great idea that she uses.  By breaking up my weekly chores into daily tasks I don't have to give up an entire day to nothing but cleaning house! Learning the 10 Commandments

As Gess is getting older we thought it was important to stress having some personal devotion time. I think she needs to know that she can pray and study God's Word anytime she chooses. We always begin her day learning something in the Bible together. Then I have her write and meditate on the portion of Scripture that was the focus for the day. Since she was doing some written work each day we thought it would be good to have a place to keep it all together so that could look it over later and remember what she has studied so far. So we made made her a notebook and titled it My Devotional and keep it with her bible. One of our early lessons this year was to memorize the 10 commandments. I recalled that Living Waters had a great resource for helping kids to memorize them so I went to their site and downloaded their 10 Commandments Learning Aids . Explaining Baptism to Kids

Gess is 9 now and often asks questions in church. Lately we have had some people come forward for baptism. Gess now wants to get baptized too because others are doing it. She just really wants to be involved in everything we do. However, we are Baptist and believe that the bible teaches only those who are saved should be baptized or partake in the Lord's Supper. It is hard to explain to a child why they can't do these things. Then I had someone else who told me they had an 8 year old girl ask about baptism because she had seen someone get baptized at her church. Being surprised by the question they were not quite sure how to answer and asked if I could write something up to help explain it. I thought, what perfect timing. This is something I want to share with Gess too, so I did more than just write up a paper. I wrote a small booklet made specifically for young kids to help explain baptism.
